Seniors World Cup 2024 Review
Ireland sent four Seniors teams to the 2024 Touch World Cup in Nottingham, consisting of the Men's 30s, Mixed 30s, Women's 35s and Men's 45s. It was a competitive and enjoyable week for all the teams with plenty of team and personal records made.
The Men's 30s (M30) started off their campaign with a convincing win against Luxembourg on the opening day. The M30 added a further five wins throughout the week meaning they finished fourth in their pool. A quarter final against New Zealand awaited and despite a strong start, New Zealand pulled away in the second half. The M30 finished the tournament in eighth place, in what was their first World Cup.
The Mixed 30s (MX30) started off the tournament strongly with wins against Fiji and China on the second day of the tournament. The rest of the tournament provided tougher competition however the MX30s managed to secure another win against Italy in their final pool game meaning a fifth place finish in the group and narrowly missing out on a quarter final spot.
The Women's 35s (W35) got given a tough group with close losses to France and South Africa at the start of the tournament. The W35s bounced back with a demolition of Fiji which resulted in a seventh place finish for them in their group. The W35s won their final play-off game against Fiji meaning a seventh place finish overall.
The Men's 45s (M45) had a convincing win against Portugal on their opening day. They followed this up with a nail biting draw against Middle East which resulted in a fifth place finish in their pool, unfortunately missing out on a quarter final spot. The M45 won their final play-off game against Spain which was also the 100th Ireland cap for Frank Ennis.
